Asia Minor and the construction of internal frontiers in Byzantium from the 7th to the 10th centuries
Resumen
Una frontera no es sólo una construcción frente al otro exterior, particularidad que se observa en los Imperios multiétnicos como el Bizantino. Asia Menor fue durante siglos un conglomerado de pueblos cuyo nexo principal fue la obediencia a un mismo emperador, pero con enormes diferencias entre sí, basadas en la lengua, la etnia y la religión, puesto que siempre se adscribían a la misma Iglesia. Durante los siglos VII al X, se produjeron numerosas divisiones del espacio microasiático con el objetivo de acomodar las nuevas fronteras internas a la realidad política bizantina de cada momento. Pero no se trató de divisiones aleatorias, sino que trataron de responder también a las características de la población que vivía en ellas. Las fuentes permiten establecer el discurso legitimador de las divisiones que se hicieron de los themata de los Anatólicos y los Armeniacos a lo largo de los tres siglos cruciales de Bizancio.

A frontier is not just a construction in the face of the outside other, a particularity that can be observed in multi-ethnic empires such as the Byzantine Empire. Asia Minor was for centuries a conglomerate of peoples whose main link was obedience to the same emperor, but with enormous differences between them, based on language, ethnicity and religion, since they were always attached to the same Church. During the 7th to 10th centuries, numerous divisions of the micro-Asiatic space took place in order to adapt the new internal borders to the Byzantine political reality of the time. However, these divisions were not random, but were also intended to respond to the characteristics of the population living within them. The sources allow us to establish the legitimising course of the divisions that were made between the themata of the Anatolians and the Armenians throughout the three crucial centuries of Byzantium.
