Después del desastre de Grecia en Asia Menor en 1922, el gobierno griego tuvo que desmovilizar su ejército desmoralizado y abandonar Esmirna y su territorio, ocupado tres años antes. Las consecuencias de este desastre marcaron la política griega durante bastantes años, repercutiendo indirectamente en los judíos sefardíes tras ser las víctimas directas de la ocupación helénica, tanto en Esmirna como en Pérgamo, sin olvidar la cuestión del empréstito forzoso y la llegada de refugiados a Salónica. Mención especial requiere la gestión de los diplomáticos españoles en favor de los sefardíes ante el gobierno griego para salvaguardar sus intereses.

After the Greek disaster in Asia Minor in 1922, the Greek government had to order the demobilization of its demoralized army and abandon Smyrna and its territory, occupied three years earlier. The consequences of this disaster were the nightmare of Greek politics for many years and the first concern of the Sephardic Jews after being the direct victims of the Hellenic occupation, both in Smyrna and in Pergamum, without forgetting the question of the forced loan and the arrival of refugees to Thessaloniki. Special mention requires the management of Spanish diplomats in favor of the Sephardim before the Greek government to safeguard their interests.
